5mm

Saw an ad in The Sportsman's Guide for 5MM ammo it's a necked down .22 Magnum made by Federal. The ad said that it had been "ahead of its time" quoted velocity at 2,300 fps. Does any one know anything about this cartridge ? Who chambered guns for it ?

its the old 5 mm rem mag... great round.  Its what the 17 HMR should be.

It went away for about 30 years, you could pick up the gun for less then a box of ammo.  Owning one, I'm very glad it came back.

Remington made a couple bolt guns  5 something something and 5 something something.( I forget the numbers)   T/C use to make barrels for thier contenders.    A few other manufactors offered them, but that was before I was born so forgive me if I don't have the details.

Consider yourself forgiven  ;D I don't recall ever working on any Encore barrels for this caliber so either they stopped making them before I worked there or it was strictly a Contender barrel, like we made 45/70 for Encore but not Contender.(J.D. Jones at SSK may have though ;D  )

Well, Sportsmans guide has it, it was pointed out to me while we were talking about odd calibers at work, I didn't check the price so I can't tell you what they wanted for it. Sounds like a hot little plinker.

its like 20/ 50, locally.

So figure online  at about 15/50.

The last box I bought was in 1999-2000 ( shortly after I got the gun) I think I paid like 100/ 50.

Seems like cowboy action shooting has brought back a lot of rounds that had gone away, like the 38 - 55, 32 - 20 etc.

I don't remember a time when Contenders weren't made in .45-70. They still make them, but maybe you were on a different line. I haven't seen the 5mm chambered in a Contender but Frank C. Barnes said they made them.

Some of the 5mm Remington 591 and 592 rifles were converted to a 5mm centerfire wildcat. I don't know what it was based on or what was involved other than changing the bolt. I think a 5mm Bee or Hornet would be nice.
