Regarding the 50 = 200, it's good enough to get pretty close on paper but truly zeroed for 200 means shooting at 200 IMHO.
For my guns, all platforms from 223 to 3006, there is a slight L or R deviaton that isn't just the wind.

Goes without saying that changing bullet weight means starting at square one.

Assuming this is not a set up to go with your name, it's a sleight on the diminutive caliber and the platform by people who prefer a battle rifle...something like an M14 that throws 30 caliber lead downrange.

Got a note last week from my son at the MCRD San Diego. They went to Pendleton for rifle testing. Their targets - with the M-16A2 mind you - required qualifications at 300, 400 and 500 yards. The 5.56 round may have its limitations - and it does IMHO - but I'm not even sure I could see a target at 500 yards! 

He scored 214 - Sharpshooter, 6 points from Expert. He has a goal now for next year when he has to requalify.

Never thought about it, but it seems you would be correct. 

It would take absolutely perfect alignment of of the sight line with the plane of the bore to not have an inaccuracy. 

Even a .0001 of an inch left or right inaccurate drift of the rear sight would become noticeable at longer ranges.

I assume he is training with the full length M-16 RIFLE, not the M-4 Carbine. We had a guy in my platoon who shot a perfect 10 for 10 at 500 yards.
I can still see the target at 500, if I wear my glasses 
Your Son is almost there Path, barring injury it's pretty much all down hill after the rifle range.
