It’s not hard to “see” IR.  Most all video chips see well below the visible range.  I believe consumer  video cameras were getting so good at it that they were putting IR filters in.  To test your camera or phone you can use a remote control (obviously an IR based one) if you don’t have any other source.

I agree an IR illuminator would be a liability on the battlefield.  But why use IR when low light Night vision is a much better option.

Good plan to check on the old phone or whatever.  I have an older BAE UTMX that has an IR in it...

Here is another thread that brings Les back to memory.  He was a good guy...I miss his input.  Following his recommendation I used some of the Mercury motor oil that cuts carbon so well just today....

Both my Samsung phone and iPad can pick up the little IR transmitter in my TV remote control.  They're not optimized for that frequency, but they do see it weakly.     Our studio cameras at work (past tense) picked up IR extremely well.    So using IR illuminator in a field confrontational situation would be like waving a flashlight at the opposition.
