This is often times a directed marketing tool, used to reach specific customer groups.  In effect, paying (via value provided) the consumer to purchase the pistol.  Such schemes are seen annually, to clear factory inventory and generate sales.  The timing and reasons vary, but are driven by the need to stimulate sales.

Lesser known is the "bounty" that certain  manufacturers pay to store employees for each one of that companies pistols sold.  The motivation is to get you to buy THAT pistol, as opposed to what might be best for that customer.

Springfield has some clever folks in their marketing department, although Springfield Inc.'s motto "The Oldest Name In American Firearms" while technically true, is misleading since the company has no connection whatsoever with the original Springfield Armory in Springfield Massachusetts.

Yeah, but have you ever tried to convince someone who works at a gun store that a private company in Geneseo, Illinois IS NOT the same thing as a long defunct government arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts that closed 6 years before the private company started? I got into that conversation while talking to a couple "experts" working at Gander Mountain about whether the government ever made "tanker" model Garands. They can find them listed in a book as being made by Springfield Armory, Inc. and think they were government contracts for Uncle Sam.  ::)
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

Yes.  It's like telling an interesting story to a milk cow.  No matter the point, the light never comes on for them.

Gander Mountain is just another box store, just like Wally World or Sears. One would think they would get it, but guns are so little of their inventory anymore that I would expect any one clerk to know more about their clothing line than a gun type - or origin. The one here recently moved their powder/primer cage off the main floor and into a "safe" back area, ostensibly due to a "safety" inspection. So now you have to ask them for a specific brand/model and they will go fetch it for you, rather than being able to look through the shelves in the cage and get it yourself.

One fo the other box stores here (we have 3! plus a locally owned Mom & Pop) - Sportsman's - does have the S&W M&P offer on the counter at the gun section. Nice feel to the firearm, and tons of gear - basically the pistol, 4 mags, 2 mag holders, a holster and carrying case all in one deal for $100 less than the Sig 250 I went in to look at (no .45ACP in stock though). Unfortunately, I have property taxes coming due next month, so no-go on the deal. But it looks like a good one.

This will be a patience building exercise waiting on the rebate items.  I submitted my rebate form back in November 2008 and still have not received the items. BTW, the dealer that I purchased my XD 9 from had the form and filled in the firearm information for me. "Cheaper than dirt" in Fort Worth Texas.

UPDATE on the rebate saga:
Called Springfield armory customer service today – waiting over 15 minutes for a representative to answer.
Was told that they are still 8 weeks behind, so in addition to original 6 – 8 weeks add an additional 8 weeks. She claimed they have boxes of the rebates that still have not been opened.
I really like my XD9 and looked at a new XDM9, with the same rebate offer. Go figure!

So how many did they sell during the rebate period?   Assuming the rebate actually contributed to the decision to buy, then it was VERY successful.

Unfortunately, I didn't know about the rebate until after I made the purchase.   HOWEVER, my next semi-auto will probably be another XD....rebate or not.

UPDATE on the rebate. I was notified on January 19 via email that SpringField received my rebate form and that it would be another 6-8 weeks.  Well just today, I received the 2 additional magazines and holder in a nice case. Great surprize as I am getting ready to go out to the range today.

Congratulations VR!

I got my email yesterday, so my magazines should be too far behind.

Got mine today.   So around 2 months from mailing in the rebate form till I got the email, then 2 weeks till they arrived.

My wife was very impressed.......not impressed enough to tell me to go buy another XD....

I'm impressed that they match your s/n and location to which magazines they send you.  Mine being a 9mm in an unrestricted state so I got the 16 rounders.

A great deal.  The pistol, holster, 4 magazines, 2 magazine pouches and a loading tool for one great price.

Now if Walther would only do that.

Great news!! I had just called about my $50 rebate from S&W for a .357 model 686 that I purchased last December. My response to my wife when I want another firearm. " You can never have too many guns, just like you can never have too many diamonds ! "
