Ideal firearms battery
« on: January 04, 2009, 07:08:44 AM »
I was just wondering, if you had a break in and lost your guns and needed to buy a battery of firearms what would they be?

My list;

Para 1911 in .45 (full-size steel frame)
Para Ltc. in .45 (meltdown treatment for carry)
PTR-91
AK-74 in 5.45mm
Mauser in 8mm (full-sized with Williams peep-sight and flash suppressor)
Mitchel Mauser 8mm 'Tanker' (same as above)
CZ bolt-acton .22lr
Ithaca M-37 8 shot riot gun (like I had to sell)
Diana RWS 350 Magnum air rifle (with peep-sight)

and plenty of mags, bullets and spare parts for all.

How about you guys?

I'd stay with more standard calibers for the rifles like 30-06,  308, 223, 7.62 x 39, etc.
All tipoes and misspelings are copi-righted.  Pleeze do not reuse without ritten persimmons  :D

I've been thinking of a book along these lines to go with THE BEST DEFENSE/Series 2, which will focus on more macro events like Katrina, etc. I'm surprised at how much current thinking was shaped by the late Mel Tappan's classic book, SURVIVAL GUNS, which I recently reread as part of my research, and the modern "extension" of those theories as covered by the pseudonymously named Boston T. Party's GUN BIBLE.

I think there are "basics" that should be in any battery. My list includes:

1) 1911 full-size .45, preferably tricked out
2) 9mm polymer-frame "service" pistol
3) .44 Magnum revolver
4) .22 semiauto rilfe
5) AR-15 or clone
6) Pump shotgun
7) Centerfire rifle (bolt, lever or semi)

If I could only have ONE of each on that list, it would be this:

1) My Richard Heinie 1911 Springfield .45; 10 Wilson 8-round magazines
2) Glock 19 9mm...the shorter slide version of the ultimate uber-pistol...5 M19 mags; 5 33-round M18 mags
3) Pre-lock S&W M-29 (I bought mine new in the mid-1970s)
4) Ruger 10/22 and lots of steel-lipped aftermarket magazines
5) Stag Arms Model 2 5.56 fitted with Aimpoint M4, 3X adaptor & SureFire Scout light
6) Remington 870 12 gauge w/Vang Comp conversion
7) FNH FN-A1a Special Police Rifle in .308 topped with a Leupold scope.

Your mileage may vary...etc...

Depends on the situation at hand as to what I would go for first, and the order.

If I need to get a short list for rapid defense of the homestead, it would be in the following order:

1) Two GI-spec .45's (same brand, nothing fancy so parts interchange) with a spare parts kit.
2) A quality .223 semi-auto rifle. (AR or Ruger ranch)
3) A quality bolt action rifle in a battle rifle chambering i.e. 30-06 or .308. (Remington 700)
4) A good pump action shotgun of the 12 ga. variety with extended mag tube (probably an 870 or 1300).

ammo, ammo, ammo, and more ammo

If the opportunity arose to add to that:

5) A Ruger .44 magnum revolver.
6) A Ruger 10/22 rimfire rifle.
7) A Buckmark .22 semi-auto pistol.
8) A 9mm (choke) polymer sub-compact (Glock)
9) A good semi-auto battle rifle (.308 or 30-06)
10) Semi-auto 12 ga. shotgun

ammo, ammo, ammo, and more ammo

Maybe a GAU-8?  ;D

I think I'd cry if I lost my Mossberg that I won here!  :'(

I'd have to get pretty much the same stuff I have now.

Henry H001 lever action .22
Heritage Rough Rider .22lr./.22mag combo
Mossberg 464 lever action.
Heritage Big Bore .357 magnum
Remington 12 gage pump

And if I added one, it would be the new Ruger Ranch rifle.

2 1911's  45acp
2 357 K frames
2 Marlin 30-30s
2 Pump 12 gauge short barrel shotguns
2 Side by side 12 gauge shotguns
2 Ar-15s
2 Scoped Bolt action Remington or Savage in 30-06 or 308

14 guns make a battery right?

Oh, and 2 Barrett Model 95 bullpup bolt action 50 cal.  Just in case someone declares a Jihad against me.   ;D
